The Youth Creating Digital Opportunities Coalition and the Youth Caucus of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) are coordinating an important international awards program to:
- Identify and document hundreds of potential best practice youth-led
ICT initiatives.
- Recognize and showcase young people's potential as development actors in their communities.
- Promote learning and skill-sharing from and between the selected
projects.
The overall prize of US$10,000 is sponsored by the Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP).
Other awards will made to category finalists using ICTs in the following areas:
- Environment: Protecting or promoting our environment, or fostering
sustainable development.
- Media: Using web, tv, radio or other technology to tell an important
stories or build community.
- Children's Rights: Promoting the rights and participation of children
especially in government decision-making processes.
- Rural: Promoting the development of rural communities.
- Employment and Entrepreneurship: Supporting economic development and
sustainable livelihoods.
- Health: Delivering information or services that lead to better health.
- Education: Increasing the accessibility or relevancy of education for students.
- Human Rights and Peace Building: Promoting peace and understanding in a conflict area.
- Culture: Celebrating cultural diversity, expression and local content.
Entries shall be judged on their:
Use of ICT, Innovation & originality, Quality of output, Understanding of and addressing local
needs, Sustainability, Accessibility, Adaptability and scope for replication, Extent of impact, and Scope for expansion.
The finalists/winners shall be announced at a ceremony at the UN World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva in December, within the ICT4D Platform.
They will have an opportunity to showcase their projects in an exhibition within the Youth HUB at the Summit, as well as through the
media.
In addition, 100 entrants shall be profiled in a book to be launched
at the Summit.
