South Africa: Educational software on offer online

Educorp has launched an online store that sells educational software titles. The company offers educational software ranging from pre-school level through to matric. While the majority of titles on offer are imported, there are some that are locally designed. Products are mainly in English, but there are also Afrikaans and Zulu titles available.

With regards to the international titles, Web manager Clive Primrose says that, while course content is generally the same, the level of education is slightly different to SA. "If an International title was labelled as ideal for eight-year-old students, then it would probably be at the level of nine-year-old students in SA."

Educorp MD Voula Philippides says the software helps students develop their skills. "The most important feature of all our software offerings is that the student is tested on what they have learned, and parents can keep track of their child's progress. "This software is more geared to teaching, exercises and results - students are really challenged as opposed to just being entertained. For the home-schooled in particular, this is definitely the computer classroom at home."

Although Educorp is not the only company offering educational software titles – stores like Makro also stock them - Primrose still feels there is a market for such a venture, and selling online is the ideal platform. "The Internet is constantly growing in SA, and also Internet speeds are increasing all the time, which helps a lot."
