SchoolNet Uganda

SchoolNet Uganda, which has recently registered as an independent NGO, is a national network of professional educators and schools whose vision is to transform the Uganda educational system from an industrial model (learning by assimilation) to a knowledge-based model. This will ultimately prepare the youth of Uganda to effectively enter the global information and knowledge economy.

SchoolNet Uganda’s mission is to make graduates of Uganda’s education system more globally competitive. As such, Ugandan educators and learners are supported by SchoolNet Uganda through the provision of pedagogical and technical expertise and advice, infrastructure and human resources, coordination, training and capacity building and developing local and international partnerships in the areas of:

 

  • Internet Connectivity and Appropriate Technology
  • Content and Curriculum Development 
  • Human Resources Development and Capacity Building
  • Community Responsibility and Development

SchoolNet Uganda’s objective is to work in partnership with all Ugandan educational institutions (public or private, primary, secondary or tertiary) to set up their ICT facilities and to develop technical and pedagogical capacity necessary to use ICT to enhance teaching and learning.

Curriculum Net

The CurriculumNet project is being initiated with assistance from IDRC. It aims to:

  • Undertake a participatory needs assessment to identify the core subjects at both the primary and secondary level whose curriculum will be integrated with ICT in education; to establish the status of computer connectivity in sampled schoolsl; and to determine the infrastructural facilities required to support a computer-based curriculum in an urban, peri -urban and rural setting.
  • Establish a CurriculumNet Resource Centre (CRC).
  • Build human resources capacity among teachers of participating schools, researchers, administrators, and staff at a variety of institutions through training in computers and computer based curriculum development.
  • To develop computer-based curriculum instructional materials in selected core subjects. This will be tested and delivered to three primary and three secondary schools in rural, peri-urban and urban settings.

IEARN UGANDA

iEARN has created a national programme in Uganda and works collaboratively with the WorLD programme. More than 20 schools and youth organizations in Kampala and other areas are actively involved in iEARN projects.

Makere University ICT Projects

Makere University has a range of ICT projects:

 

  • A programme for collaborative research between Makerere University and Swedish universities, with the assistance of Sida/ SAREC, has been initiated. Sida/SAREC agreed in principle that assistance would be provided to Makerere in developing the framework for the establishment of ICT infrastructure to support collaborative efforts.
  • Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) through NUFU is supporting the strengthening of Administrative Computing at the University as one of the many components of an Institutional Development Programme.
  • The Government of Uganda received a loan from the African Development Bank (ADB) for the strengthening of Scientific and Technical Teacher Education.
  • USAID through the Leland Initiative is supporting a project focussing on the establishment of Internet Connectivity for Makerere University. The project will also provide wireless intranet connectivity for all faculties and administrative centres.

Mengo Computer Scheme

Mengo, through the Ministry of Education and Sports, has started a joint computer credit scheme for education institutions with DEHEZI International Limited (DIL) an Australian funded company that supplies computers in Uganda. The scheme is intended to provide computers to educational institutions at affordable terms of payments so enabling students and local people to develop knowledge of ICTs. Through a partnership launched on April 11, 2020, over 120 computers were handed over to 15 schools in Buganda.

Uganda Connect(UCONNECT)

Uganda Connect is a registered Charity in Zambia that promotes the advancement of public education in the country. Focus areas include, using ICT for education; the improvement of the quality and efficiency of communications through the provision of necessary hardware and software; and the training of teachers and managers in the use of communications software especially e-mail and the Internet.
